On Dec. 23, 2011, ASU lost two legendary coaches:

Neil Abel '67 MSE '74 was golf coach from 1980 until his retirement in 2006. He led the ASU men's golf team to NCAA regional appearances in 1997, 2000, 2001 and 2002 and helped start the A-State women's golf program, which he coached from 1992-96. He was inducted into the ASU Hall of Honor in 2009.

Bennie Ellender was ASU head football coach from 1963 through 1970. At A-State, his teams were in the national rankings six of his eight years and won Pecan Bowl Championships in 1969 and 1970. He was voted Southland Conference Coach of the Year three times, and his 1970 ASU team was rated #1 in the NCAA college division.
Other Fall 2011 notable passages include:
Dr. George Alcott '36 of Bald Knob passed away on Sept. 20 at age 94. Prior to his death, he was the oldest living recipient of the Wilson Award, ASU's highest student honor. After the war, he became a dentist, often performing his services for free.
Orieda Horn Anderson '42 passed away August 5 at age 89. She was one of four children who attended A-State in its early years, and remained a supporter through family scholarships. She wrote the article in the ASU Centennial book titled 'No Excuses,' recalling such historical figures as V. C. Kays, and also spotlighted the courtyards atop Wilson Hall where students held teas and recitals, bringing to life a lost chapter of ASU history.
Dr. Ken Beadles, Emeritus Professor of biology and former Dean of the Graduate School until his retirement from ASU in '93, passed away August 30. In 2010, as part of the ASU Centennial, he was honored as one of the 'First 100 Distinguished Faculty.'
