Carr's Grocery Owners Retire

On Feb. 13, 1959, Elbert and Glenda Carr opened Carr's College Grocery on Johnson Avenue adjacent to the A-State campus. For decades they worked seven days a week to serve A-State students, alumni, faculty and staff. Many former students returned to Carr's Grocery with their children and grandchildren. Some ASU alumni recall meeting their spouse at Carr's.

Carr's Grocery is part of ASU's history. It seems like sooner or later, everybody went to Carr's.

On April 1, 2008, Mr. and Mrs. Carr officially retired after 49 years of service, and a festive farewell party was held on Saturday, March 29. Many past, present and future members of the ASU family attended to offer their best wishes and reminisce about the good times (and fried chicken!) they enjoyed at Carr's.

By virtue of their service to the university and its alumni, the ASU Alumni Association board of directors voted to extend to Mr. and Mrs. Carr an honorary membership in the ASU Alumni Association. Thanks to the Carrs for being part of the ASU family for almost half a century!
