Distinguished Alumni Nominations due May 1 Do you know a notable ASU alumnus? The annual Distinguished Alumni award is the most prestigious honor for ASU graduates, recognizing those who have distinguished themselves professionally, in their community and through service to the university. The recipients for 2005 are Buddy Beck '59, Bobby Caldwell '70 and Bill Phillips '72. Recipients are selected from nominations submitted by alumni and other members of the ASU community. The deadline for nominations is May 1.
New Alumni Association Benefit Members of the ASU Alumni Association will receive a 10% discount on food purchased at Wings to Go, 1712 South Caraway in Jonesboro. Just present your membership card and enjoy a discount on their famous wings with 18 different sauces, chicken tenders, buffalo shrimp and their famed "garbage fries." Mainspring in Concert The ASU Department of Music presents 'Mainspring' in the Fine Arts Center recital hall on Monday, Jan. 23, at 7:30 p.m. The group fuses Celtic, Latin, jazz, and classical music to create an exciting new sound. ASU faculty members Ed Owen and Craig Collison will join the ensemble for this performance. The concert is free and open to the public. Lecture~Concert presents Philip Deloria As part of the Lecture~Concert series, Dr. Philip Deloria, author of the book Playing Indian, will speak at Fowler Center on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. Deloria is a professor and director of the American culture program at the University of Michigan. His program is titled, “From Nation to Neighborhood: Empire, Colonialism, and American Indian Studies.” The event is free and open to the public. For more information, click here.
'Growing a Technology Business' Conference The ASU Arkansas Biosciences Institute hosts 'Growing a Technology Business' on Wednesday, Jan. 25. The conference includes panel discussions on how to successfully launch a technology-based business, and is designed for entrepreneurs, students, faculty and other interested individuals. Faculty Biennial Art Exhibition The 2006 Faculty Biennial, featuring works from ASU studio art faculty members, opened yesterday in the Bradbury Gallery in Fowler Center and continues through Feb. 19. The exhibit includes new work by Roger Carlisle, Tom Chaffee, Shelley Gibson, John Keech, Neil Matthiessen, Gayle Pendergrass '81 MA '86, Daniel J. Reeves, William Rowe, John Salvest, Curtis Steele and Kim Vickrey. Gallery hours Tuesday through Saturday are 12 - 5 p.m., and 2 - 5 p.m. on Sundays.
"Red" Wins National Award "Red," ASU's spirit character, finished in second place at the 2006 College Nationals Mascot Championship in Orlando last weekend. "Red” was one of 10 mascots and spirit characters competing at Disney’s Wide World of Sports. This is fourth major honor for “Red,” including the 'best mascot' award at the Universal Cheerleader Association’s College Division camp at the University of Alabama last summer. Benefits Corner
HPESS Hours for Spring Semester As a benefit of joining the ASU Alumni Association, members may use the Health, Physical Education and Sports Science (HPESS) facility on campus (for a small additional fee). HPESS hours for the spring semester are: Monday-Thursday (8 a.m. - 10 p.m.), Friday (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.), and Saturday-Sunday (1 - 5 p.m.) For swimming pool hours and more information, click here.
