AMEN
Alumni Mentoring Email Network
Undergraduate Participant
Rules of Engagement:
Common sense suggestions to help your student-alumni partnership become a smashing success
- RESPECT YOUR ALUMNUS/ALUMNA: Never forget that time is valuable to your AMEN partner—do not waste their time by forwarding them junk emails—and please, do not ask any personal or disrespectful questions. (For example: don’t ask the person’s salary, but you can ask what the range of salaries are in that field, etc.)
- THIS IS GUIDANCE, NOT A FREE RIDE: Resist the temptation to ask for a reference from your alumni partner. The AMEN network is a very low-key program—its aim is for students to have an opportunity to have their most pressing professional questions answered. This is not an opportunity for students to attempt to harass their email partner into getting a position at their firm or office.
- QUALITY, NOT QUANTITY: Echoing Rule #1, please do not overload your alumnus with loads of unnecessary questions. At least initially - until, perhaps, a working relationship has developed over time - limit yourself to one brief email a week, asking your alumnus important career questions [see suggestions sheet for guidance].
- CARPE AMEN: Just as you should “seize the day,” we really hope that you enjoy this program. Asking a successful professional essential job questions can only catapult you to greater heights of success. Please contact the FAN office if your partnership does not goes as planned—or if you change career paths. We want this program to work for you.
I will abide by the aforementioned regulations regarding the Future Alumni Network AMEN program. Evidence of disregarding these stated rules will result in termination from program.
